Mike & April + 1

What a beautiful time we had at Leu Gardens in Winter Park this morning. The sun came up, the birds were singing, the roses still had dew on them, and we celebrated the Shippy’s pregnancy while April is at 35 weeks. What I love about this couple is that you can tell Mike makes April feel at ease -  I don’t hear what he says to her but he is always making her laugh! I love it.

We were not lacking interesting locations to shoot at Leu Gardens. There were so many types of gardens we didn’t make it to all of them, but each had their own beauty.

The very proud new parents-to-be:

These pale pink roses are similar to the color Mike and April just painted their nursery! Gorgeous!

Congratulations Mike and April! Thank you so much for allowing me to capture this time in your lives. I can’t wait to meet Baby Girl Shippy soon!!

Reid Theodore Granger: Newborn

Orlando Newborn Photographer; Panama City Newborn Photographer

We are pleased to join the Granger family in welcoming Reid Thoedore Granger! Reid came into this world on April 20th and weighed 8 pounds 13 ounces and is 21 inches long. The fact that he was a boy was a complete surprise to his parents until delivery. He was named Reid and his middle name, Theodore, is a family name.

Reid’s baby quilt is passed down from generations and is a family heirloom!

This sweet family may look familiar to you – they have allowed us to capture some pretty exciting events in the past year; including their engagement shoot at the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse and their wedding ceremony in Atlantic Beach! This same picture frame of Reid’s grandfather was also displayed in Lindsey’s bouquet when she was married.

Congratulations Lindsey and Stephen!

The little herb garden that could

This year, Epcot’s international flower festival really inspired me re-plan out my front yard. I transformed my favorite front bed into a completely edible garden, meanwhile incorporating my husband’s country garden British style with edible basil boxwoods to help give structure.

I went for a really organic look with markers made out of shaved sticks (Ryan helped me with this!). This year I have two different kinds of oregano (Mexican/spicy and Greek/Mediterranean), four different kinds of mint (sweet, peppermint, orange, and chocolate), and two different kinds of basil (boxwood and sweet). Most are easily recognizable by smell and taste, but with 18 varietals in one bed, you’ve got to find a fun way to keep them all straight!

Did you know that ‘Rocket’ is the British term for ‘Arugula’? We learned this when ordering a pizza topped with ‘rocket’ while visiting England. I wasn’t sure what it was, and with a name like rocket it had to be exciting. The waitress offered to bring me a sample, I agreed, and she delivered a small, delicate piece of lettuce. Though it’s just a lettuce, the exciting taste lives up to it’s exciting name. Rocket has a rich, peppery taste and is good on not only pizza, but also mixed into salads, soups and pasta dishes.

A helpful hint: I began to notice that if I wrote on the sticks immediately after my husband shaved them, the ink bled more. I decided to let the rest dry out overnight before writing on them, and they still bled a little but not as much. I’m also curious to see how these hold up after a rain..

I topped the garden off with a little vintage-inspired decor from Epcot’s international flower show to give it a little artsy vibe..

Succulent gardens are very trendy right now and super easy to grow because they require little maintenance. I already grow succulents indoors and enjoy them so much that I recently added two low-lying pots of succulents on my front porch for the summer. The trick is to fill the lower half of your pot with rocks and just top off with a little soil to ensure good drainage. And do not water with a watering can or hose – only mist with a bottle about once a week.

And to end the post with something pretty – I planted two delicate little verbenas in the palest shades of pink in pots on either side of the porch entryway. I appropriately named one ‘blush’ and one ‘bashful.’ They make me smile.

a box of SUNSHINE

By Stephanie King, Orlando Photographer

What do you need when you’re feeling down or you’ve just gone through a loss? Prayers, friendship, support.. A box of sunshine??

I have always been a crafty person but now I have to give Pinterest credit for the creativity because it has changed the way I do crafts. You can find the original craft here. I happened upon this idea on Pinterest the same week I discovered I had two friends who needed some encouragement. The Lord’s timing is perfect. And encouraging others is one of my favorite things to do! So I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to make my first box of sunshine. I have a feeling this will soon become a tradition of mine.

So what are the contents in such a box? They only need to have one thing in common – the color of sunshine! So I started out with some fresh annuals, marigolds, because nothing is happier than fresh flowers. Then I took a traditional ceramic pot and painted the middle with chalk paint since that seems to be my favorite medium right now. I added (with yellow chalk, of course) a verse from the Psalms. (The verse is: “The Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does He withold from those who walk uprightly.”) Only the first part of the verse fit on my planter..

Other contents in the box included:

a box or basket (I was hoping to use a wine crate, but could not find any at my local stores)

yellow crinkle paper

sunsweet dried mangos

blonde oreos

yellow duckie cookie cutter (it is Easter season after all)

sanpeligrino lemonada

yankee candles in the scent of birthday cupcake

a pouch of sunflower seeds

a bag of miscellaneous yellow candy (bazooka bubble gum, sour balls, lemon slices, yellow taffy, sweet tarts) tied with a yellow ribbon

and a yellow card that says ‘I’m thinking about you.’

I found a card that says, “If a little bit of sunshine came into your world every time I thought of you… you would have a tan by now!” I think a lighthearted card goes well with such a lighthearted gift.

I hope you can use this idea to encourage someone you know. If you do, please let me know what sort of items you include in your box of sunshine!

Happy Spring!

Today is the first day of spring!  Here in Florida it has already been feeling like summer with high temperatures in the 80s.  Spring is my absolute most favorite time of the year!  Why, you may ask?  Because of all the beautiful flowers that spring up out of the formerly dark, dead earth!  Flowers are just so cheerful!  They are delicate and colorful and yet hardy in that they can survive the winter and spring forth from the ground with just a little moisture and sunshine.  Here are a few of the shots from my backyard..

These beautiful purple ones are wild!
